Do you feel stuck, disconnected, or isolated?

Maybe you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, except that you need something different. The way you’re doing things right now just isn’t working anymore. Or maybe you feel too overwhelmed to even catch your breath, let alone think about where to start with making changes.

If this sounds like you, the good news is that you don’t have to figure this out on your own. Trauma and other stressful life events can shape the way our nervous system interacts with the world around us, and while talking about our problems can be incredibly powerful on its own, sometimes we need to dig a little deeper in order to truly regain our sense of inner stability.

In the same way that a tree needs healthy soil and the right amount of light and nutrients to thrive, our nervous system has to be nurtured properly in order for us to thrive. Early experiences shape the way our nervous system learns to adapt to the world around us, and sometimes we learn to act or react in ways that we aren’t even fully conscious of. If the roots of the tree aren’t healthy, we might never see it bloom.

Luckily, resilience is a skill that nature illustrates beautifully. Together, we can tap into your resilience and figure out how to help you bloom again.

What’s it like to work with me?

Lauren Hawkins LGBT Trauma Therapy near me in Fort Worth, Dallas, Cincinnati, Denver, Colorado Springs

I get it, counseling can feel uncomfortable. Even though this process can feel vulnerable and a little strange, my priority is making sure that you feel seen, heard, and valued in every session. We’re going to do our best to make the uncomfortable as comfortable as we can.

Counseling with me is a place where you can let go of the pressure to be anything other than yourself and explore what it means to show up authentically. You can unclench your jaw, relax your shoulders, and take a deep breath. We’re in this together, and this is your space to come as you are and lean into who you want to be.

I know that you already have an abundance of unique strengths and an innate capacity for healing and growth, so I will focus on creating a nurturing environment with the right conditions for you to safely explore your thoughts and feelings.

My Approach

  • All parts of your identity are welcome and honored here. Affirmation goes beyond acceptance, because you deserve to be celebrated, not just tolerated.

  • Yes, you. I might be the mental health professional, but nobody knows you like you.

You know what works for you and what doesn’t. If we are ever doing something that you’re not comfortable with, or if you’d like to talk about or try something that I haven’t suggested, I trust your judgement.

You’re always going to have the final say over the decisions that are made during our work together.

  • We all have unique, intersectional identities, and many of us often experience unique, intersectional marginalization and oppression because of these identities.

I strive to always consider the various impacts of power, inequality, and systemic oppression and work to dismantle these within our therapeutic relationship. I recognize my own privileged position as a white, cisgender, therapist and I am dedicated to creating an environment where we can have open discussions about the impact of these dynamics both within our work and outside of the therapy space.

I will likely make mistakes, but I am committed to doing the professional and personal work that it takes to combat inequality and create more equitable access to resources and mental health care.

  • Even though we are all impacted by climate change and global warming, the consequences are not felt equally by all groups of people.

Climate change can have disproportionately harmful social, financial, mental, emotional, and physical impacts on marginalized populations. Understanding this, I am committed both personally and professionally to advocating for an intersectional approach to climate justice and sustainability.

For other mental health professionals, or anyone interested in learning more about climate change and mental health through a professional counseling advocacy lens, my manuscript on this topic in the Journal of Counselor Leadership and Advocacy can be found here: Climate change and mental health: the counseling professional’s role

  • I embrace weight inclusivity and respect and affirm the diversity of bodies, weights, shapes, and sizes that we all exist in.

I utilize a framework for care that affirms a holistic definition of health not focused on weight loss or weight management as a goal.

Health can and does exist at any size, and it does not have a certain body type.
